Monica O. Crowder is in her 22nd year as a music educator and 18th year as director of Bands at Barren County Middle School. Prior to BCMS, Mrs. Crowder taught band and choir in the Henry County School system. Monica is a 1993 graduate of the University of Louisville, earning a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance and a teaching certificate in Instrumental Music. While at U of L, Monica was principal clarinet in both the symphonic band and orchestra. Additionally, she was the drum major of the Cardinal Marching Band. In 2004, Mrs. Crowder received her Master of Arts in Education Degree from Western Kentucky University.
Under her instruction, Mrs. Crowder’s ensembles have received several accolades including performances at the 2002 and 2012 Kentucky Music Educators Association In-Service Conferences, and an invitational performance at the 2011 National Middle School Association Conference. Her bands have received 21 years of consistent distinguished ratings at KMEA Festivals and Best Junior High Concert Band at 10 “Music in the Parks” Festivals. As an assistant to the Barren County High School band program, Monica’s influence has produced numerous successes including a Bands of America Regional Class Championship in 2007, Mid-States Band Association Championships in 2008, 2009, 2010, six consecutive appearances as a finalist band at the Contest of Champions and straight distinguished ratings at district and state concert band festivals. Additionally, the BCHS concert band was selected to perform at the 2003, 2012, and 2016 KMEA In-Service Conferences. Finally, the BCHS Concert Band was also selected to perform in the “Spotlight Series” at Carnegie Hall in New York City on April 15, 2012.
Mrs. Crowder is active statewide as a middle school music educator. She serves as an adjudicator for concert band festivals, solo and ensemble festivals, and all-state auditions. Monica held the position of KMEA Third District Middle School Band Chair from 2005-2010. She has also served as a guest conductor for numerous all-district bands throughout the state of Kentucky. In May of 2012, Mrs. Crowder was selected as the “Hometown Hero” for WBKO (Bowling Green’s ABC Affiliate) for her work with the Barren County Bands. In 2002, 2010, and 2015 Monica was selected as the Third District Music Educators Association Middle School Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Crowder has also previously served as an At-Large Member of the KMEA Executive Committee and as the State Middle School Band Chair for KMEA. Her professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu, Christian Educators Association, NAfME, and KMEA.
